Museum Space
I had the opportunity to consult with a museum on the design of an open-ended play and learning space that encourages creative exploration through art and design. The goal was to create an engaging experience—both indoors and outdoors—that invites visitors of all ages to experiment, imagine, and discover through hands-on interaction. Centered around the foundational design concepts of color, shape, and pattern, the space promotes self-directed play, creative expression, and meaningful learning without prescribing a single "right" way to engage. By embracing multiple learning styles and encouraging open-ended exploration, the experience inspires curiosity, creativity, and connection for every visitor.
Step 2: Design Refinement
After several rounds of brainstorming and collaborative discussions with the team, I translated the concepts into a polished design rendering accompanied by the rationale behind each key design decision. Presenting the space in a more realistic and detailed format helped the team better visualize how the lab would function and understand the purpose behind each design choice.
Step 1: Design Concept Development
The project began with a discovery phase, where I collaborated with museum staff and key stakeholders to understand their vision, objectives, and success criteria for the new space. To complement these conversations, I conducted contextual observations throughout the museum, studying how visitors moved through exhibits, interacted with installations, and engaged with one another. The insights gathered from stakeholder interviews and visitor observations informed a series of early concept sketches that explored spatial layouts, interactive experiences, and design opportunities aligned with the museum's educational mission and visitor experience goals.
Step 3: Design Board & Implementation Guide
Once the design direction is approved, I develop a comprehensive design board that outlines finishes, color palettes, furniture selections, design principles, technology recommendations, and art type recommendations. This serves as a blueprint for implementation, giving the team clear guidance on what needs to be purchased, built, and installed.
